  • FSSAI Urges States to Boost Surveillance of Milk & Milk Products to Fight Adulteration

    In an offer to check on adulteration, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has asked food safety authorities of States and Union Territories to boost the surveillance of milk and milk products, especially during the festival season, and maintain strict attention on milk chilling units among other measures. In a written response in the Lok Sabha, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare declared, “To examine the problem of milk adulteration in the country, the FSSAI has advised the food safety authorities in States/ UTs to maintain a strict vigilance on milk chilling units, augment surveillance during festive seasons, follow a policy of periodic transfers in respect of Food Safety Officers (FSOs) and generating local intelligence regarding the malpractices and fortifying testing and enforcement infrastructure.”

    The Pashu Palan Mela, for dairy farmers, also commenced at the same time on the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) campus. The PAU reported that about 60,000 farmers also participated in the fair online, with the theme being "Reduce farm expenditure by making optimal use of water and fertilizers." Dr. Bikram Gill, a well-known wheat breeder from Kansas State University, USA, was the chief guest at the PAU fair. He spoke about his past experiences as the son of a farmer and praised the institution's remarkable contribution to the nation's food buffer.

    The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar, delivered his speech via a video message and praised Krishi Jagran for organizing the mela. He congratulated the conference on behalf of the Indian Government and expressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dedication to the farmers' interests in the country. He highlighted the various schemes introduced by the government, including PM Kisan Yojana, which has already benefited 11.5 crore farmers across the country. Tomar emphasized that the farmers in Orissa are also availing the benefits of this scheme and improving their economic condition. Furthermore, he acknowledged that farmers will benefit from the Krishi Sanyantra Mela by modernizing and advancing their farming techniques.

     

  • Dairy Farmers in Coimbatore Protest Low Procurement Prices, Seek Hike in Milk Prices

    In Coimbatore, dairy farmers have gone on strike, seeking a hike in milk prices. The farmers are protesting the low procurement prices being offered by the state-run Aavin dairy cooperative. The shortage of milk has led to delays in the delivery of milk packets across the state. The farmers have been demanding that the state government increase the procurement price for milk by cooperative societies. As part of the strike, the farmers have emptied cans of milk on several roads in Coimbatore and other areas of western Tamil Nadu. They have threatened to stop supplying milk to Aavin, which could lead to further problems.

The review meeting programme had already been launched in other states and union territories of the country, where Parshottam Rupala talked with beneficiaries, fishermen, fish farmers, traders, and other stakeholders about the progress of the fisheries industry. On March 25, 2023, a review meeting programme was held at NOCCI Balasore Infrastructure Company in Bampada with fishermen, fish farmers, and other stakeholders in the fisheries industry, showcasing initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
