  • Onion Auctions Halted in Maharashtra Amidst Traders' Dispute Over Charges and Tariffs

Onion supply from Nashik to various parts of the country has stopped since April 4, 2024, as there has been no auction at 15 APMC in Nashik district. Many traders in Maharashtra are reporting that the halt in auctions is due to their argument that since the weighing, loading, and unloading of onions have been mechanized in the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC), it would be unfair to deduct weighing and labor charges from the farmers.
Additionally, there's a disagreement between onion traders and the Nasik district Mathadi Workers Union (NDMWU) on the issue of tariffs. The NDMWU wants traders to pay a 34% tariff on the amount collected from the farmers, which traders are refusing to pay.
However, some traders are also indicating that unethical auction activities have resumed in certain areas of the district, such as Lasalgaon, Umarane, Jalgaon, Malegaon, etc.
