Himanshu Nath Singh is working to bring change to agriculture in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, a region where sugarcane farming has long been a key part of the local economy and tradition. His efforts are focused on shifting the agricultural practices in the area. For over four decades, his family has cultivated sugarcane, building a legacy of hard work and dedication to the land. Yet, Himanshu recognized that to truly enhance both productivity and profitability, it was essential to evolve beyond traditional farming methods.
With a forward-thinking mindset, he embraced modern agricultural practices, integrating organic fertilizers, mechanization, and scientific crop management techniques. His approach emphasizes precision, from timely sowing to selecting improved sugarcane varieties, all while focusing on sustainable farming methods that lead to healthier crops and better long-term yields.

Scientific Approach to Sugarcane Cultivation
Himanshu believes in precision and efficiency in sugarcane farming. He has chosen sugarcane varieties like 0118, 14235, 16202, and 15466 for their higher productivity and superior disease resistance. The crops are sown at proper spacing, not like in other traditional farms, where there is no proper spacing between the crops.
There should be a minimum of five feet between the rows and one foot between the buds. This method maximizes germination rates and reduces seed wastage by 50 percent. This method also supports the plants to grow together without competition for nutrients.
Role of Organic and Balanced Fertilization
The main reason for his success is the balanced use of organic and chemical fertilizers. Organic manure, cow dung compost, and bio-fertilizers like Jeeva Amrit are used to maintain soil fertility and reduce dependence on synthetic inputs. He practices intercropping by growing potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, and mustard along with sugarcane. This cropping practice enhances soil health and provides an additional source of income.

Embracing Technology: Role of Mini Tractors
Himanshu's farming journey has one of the most impressive factors is the fact that he uses modern machinery. His fields have been adapted with mini tractors. This tractor eases soil management, weeding, and earthing up (mounding of soil around the base of the crop).
He has a 5-foot spacing between rows in his sugarcane fields which allows room for the mini tractor to come through. The mechanization minimizes all sorts of labor work and, consequently, reduces the overall costs. Farming has become efficient and not time-consuming. It also enhances productivity while reducing dependency on labor.
Outstanding Profitability and Yield
The effects of these innovations can be seen in his production statistics. Himanshu has cultivated sugarcane on 10 acres of land. He has harvested 2470 quintals per acre. His cost-to-profit ratio is highly favorable, as Rs. 600 profit is generated for every Rs.1000 spent. He has a turnover of over Rs 1 crore every year. He therefore stands as an example of the fact that farming can be both sustainable and very profitable if the right strategies are applied.

Beyond Farming: Empowering Fellow Farmers
His success is not only about his achievements. He had managed to uplift others through his endeavor. He actively sells sugarcane seeds from his farm. He is giving other farmers access to high-yielding varieties.
He shares his knowledge and experiences with the farmers in his region. This way they can also practice advanced farming techniques. This is the only way they can increase their productivity and profitability. His farm has now become a learning center where farmers get to understand how sustainable and high-yield agriculture is carried out.
Recognition and Awards for Excellence in Farming
Himanshu is a dedicated sugarcane farmer who has garnered several awards. He has also won the 'State Award' under the MFOI Awards 2024 conducted by Krishi Jagran for his outstanding work in sugarcane farming.
He achieved the third position for the production of sugarcane in Uttar Pradesh. This award was given the recognition of his innovativeness and hard work on agricultural mastery.
