Weather Update: Northeast India Braces for Heavy Rainfall as Cyclonic Circulations Intensify Over Assam & Bangladesh; Western Disturbance to Impact North India

A combination of rain, snowfall, temperature fluctuations, and dense fog is expected to influence India's weather this week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh, snowfall in the Western Himalayas, and varying temperatures across Central and Eastern India. Additionally, dense fog is anticipated in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal, which may impact visibility. Here’s a detailed forecast for the upcoming days

Cyclonic Circulations to Bring Rainfall in Northeast

Two cyclonic circulations—one over northeast Bangladesh and another over northeast Assam—are expected to influence the weather in the region.

  • Arunachal Pradesh will experience scattered to fairly widespread light rainfall or snowfall, with thunderstorms and lightning from February 11 to 12. Heavy rainfall is anticipated on February 10 and 11.

  • Assam will witness isolated light rainfall from February 11 to 13.

  • Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will see isolated light rainfall from February 11 to 12.

Western Disturbance to Impact Northern India

A Western Disturbance in the form of a cyclonic circulation over north Afghanistan, along with strong westerly jet stream winds of up to 120 knots at 12.6 km above sea level, will affect the Western Himalayan region.

  • Isolated to scattered light rainfall or snowfall is expected over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand between February 11 and 12.

Dense Fog Warnings

IMD has also issued fog warnings for parts of eastern India:

  • East Uttar Pradesh and Odisha will experience dense fog during early morning hours on February 11.
  • Gangetic West Bengal will see dense fog from February 11 to 12.

The national capital region will experience a mix of partly cloudy to clear skies, with varying wind speeds and occasional fog or mist during morning hours.
